We have outlined below some of the most important driving rules of Austria, in order to help awareness of different driving
laws in foreign countries.

Please use below rules as guide, but keep in mind that rules are subject to change and they are corrected as of November 2012.

Please lease with your local Avis representative about toll charges and road charges before leaving the Avis car hire location
and whether snow tyres or chains are needed.

Which Side of the Road?

Please drive on the RIGHT side of the road.

Unique Country Driving Laws

  • You should not use your horn around Vienna, and hospitals because you may get a fine.
  • You must obtain a voucher when parking, these can be bought almost anywhere.
  • Do not overtake school buses, when the yellow lights are flashing.

Speed Limits

For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
  • Urban areas: up to 50 km/h
  • Rural areas: 100 km/h
  • Motorways: 130 km/h
  • Snow Chains is 50 km/h

A general rule around Austrian towns is a speed limit of 30km/h

Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws

It is compulsory for all inside the vehicle to wear a seatbelt.
  • All Children under 14 years old and less than 1.50 metres in height, are not permitted to travel as a front or rear seat passenger unless using suitable restraint system for their height / weight.
  • Sports cars may not transport chidren under 14 years old.
